The trail was a route for moving goods to allies in South Vietnam.

The Ha Chi Minh trail was actually an extensive network of trails near the border of Cambodia which was crucial for the North Vietnamese to move troops and goods into South Vietnam. It was largely covered by jungle and included many fake trails to confuse enemies, making it a very useful transport route.
