The Gideon v. Wainwright case in 1963 is a historically important one because after it, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the states in the union are required under the Sixth Amendment of the United States constitution to provide an attorney to defendants in criminal cases who are unable to afford their own attorneys. These attorneys are assigned to them by the court and the defendant does not need to pay for their services.
