How did the Meiji's restoration to power in 1867 affect imperialism in Japan?

Japan went back to being an imperialistic country, but many things changed because of that. With the Shoguns out of the way, Japan adopted many "modern" (western) behaviors. Many old customs were abandoned or forbidden. Carrying a sword became outlawed, as also did the way of the Samurai. Also, Japan became a more industrialized country as a consequence of trying "to catch up" with "modern" western nations.
