Radical Reconstruction, also known as Congressional Reconstruction, was the time when congressional Republicans, moderates and Radicals, controlled Reconstruction in the South. Prior to Republican control, Andrew Johnson's Presidential Reconstruction had allowed ex-Confederate leaders to regain power in southern state governments.
