I believe the answer is: Stress, trauma, or an extremely distressing situation.

Dissociative amnesia refers to the type of amnesia that happened due to the breakdown of memory and conciousness in order to flee from a certain situation.
The overwhelming negative feeling that caused by stress or traume could cause the needs to 'flee' from their current emotional state.
