What kind of man is John Proctor?

Proctor is a tormented individual that throughout the entire play he is filled with guilt and shame over his affair with Abigail. He is unable to forgive himself for it and only in the end of the play when he confesses to save Elizabeth does she forgive him and he forgives himself.
