Abraham Lincoln military strategy of promoting war generals informed by political and ethnic consideration turned out to be major frustration in the war front. the early losses of union forces early in the civil war is related to to the military failures of these politically appointed generals. Nevertheless, it also preserved loyalty from the ethnic groups and thus helped preserve the union.
