Answer:

Explanation

Lisa and Tom are going door to door selling raffle tickets. Lisa has already collected more money then Tom. In fact, she has collected $ 14 more dollars then Tom. Together, they have collected $ 22. How much money did each one collect ?

x = amount of money Lisa collected

y = amount of money Tom collected

x = 14 + y

x + y = 22

=============

solve :

sub in 14 + y for x back into the second equation

x + y = 22

14 + y + y = 22

14 + 2y = 22

2y = 22 - 14

2y = 8

y = 8/2

y = 4......Tom has collected $ 4

now sub 4 in for y back into either of the original equations

x + y = 22

x + 4 = 22

x = 22 - 4

x = 18 .....Lisa has collected $ 18
