The empirical formula of a compound expresses a ratio between the numbers of atoms of different elements present in a molecule of the compound. This ratio is a mole ratio as well as a ratio between numbers of atoms. From the formula it is possible to calculate the percent composition of a compound, while, a chemical (or molecular) formula is a way of presenting information about the chemical proportions of atoms that constitute a particular chemical compound or molecule, using chemical element symbols, numbers, and sometimes also other symbols, such as parentheses, dashes, brackets, commas and plus and minus signs.
