Plessy v. Ferguson, ruled in 1896, was a Supreme Court ruling that validated the South's preference of segregation. In this case, segregation was ruled to be constitutional under the condition that all people were equal. With this interpretation of the concept of segregation, the majority races essentially stretched the idea as far as possible by treating minorities as subhuman. This ruling led to controversy but was seen as one of history's most influential decisions.
