The Safavid empire had a short life, especially when compared to the long duration of the Ottoman empire. But during its brief existence, and particularly during the first century, the Safavid empire established itself as one of the great Islamic dynasties. Perhaps most important of all achievements was the widespread conversion of the Persians to Shiism and the development of Persian nationalism, which continues to this day in Iran.
