Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527) was the author of The Prince (1513). This book was dedicated to Lorenzo de Pieto de Médici (1492-1519), an Italian ruler of the republican city of Florence from 1516 to 1519. Machiavelli was a public man and worked with diplomatical affairs.

The Prince is a treatise about politics, how it works and what makes a ruler powerful and respected. By putting politics at the center of his work, and separating it from moral and religion, he framed it as a field of human action and opened up possibilities new at the time. He is usually credited as the father of political science.
