Answer: Yes, people who are severely burned often die from infection.

Explanation: The skin is the largest organ of the body. It covers almost the entire surface area, and it is fortified with a defense mechanism which consists primarily of two layers: epidermis and dermis.

In victims with severe burns, the primary roles of these two layers become highly compromised, hence, functions such as maintainenance of body fluids balance, prevention of moisture loss, regulation of body temperature, ability to sense pressure are greatly reduced.

Eventually, this results to body invasion by opportunistic micro organisms such as Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Toxoplasma gondii amongst others - resulting in death.
