The biggest difference between the types of bulb is how they produce light. Fluorescent bulbs produce light by a heating a metal filament until it heats up and starts to radiate light. On the other hand, fluorescent bulbs produce light by exciting a gas and causing it to glow. Generally, the fluorescent lights will be a lot cheaper to run as well.
