James Monroe (1758-1831) was the fifth U.S. president (1817-1825). Monroe is best known for issuing Monroe Doctrine (1823) which opposes European colonialism in the Americas. This was a crucial moment for the American foreign policy.

Apart from this, his major accomplishments as a president include:

  • acquisition of Florida in 1819
  • signing the Missouri Compromise in 1820
  • five states joined the Union during his term in the office: Mississippi, Illinois, Alabama, Maine, Missouri.
