A remote control only works when it is pointed at the television. What is the best explanation for this?

It could be due to the use of an LED signal. The stronger the signal is, the farther you could be pointing from the TV, if the signal is weaker you normally have to point it directly at the cable box for the signal to be transmitted.

Answer:

The remote control transmits information through waves, such as infrared waves, to the television.
