The nitrogen cycle could not exist without bacteria. Bacteria that lived inside the soil, capture the nitrogen that was fixed and convert it to nitrate. This nitrate was then used as a nutrient during photosynthesis, from which the plants produced another fixed nitrogen and completed the cycle.
