They first got the name Puritans due to their attempt to "purify" the Church of England – and especially to remove any traces of the Roman Catholic Church. In addition, Puritans disapproved of Christmas and Easter on the grounds that these holidays were invented by man and not prescribed by the Bible, and as such could not be Holy.
