How does lack of sleep affect risk of injury?

Sleep deprivation causes a drop in cognitive capacity hence increases error rate during carrying out of tasks. It is believed that lack of sleep causes brain neurons to communicate ineffectively. Research has also shown that some accidents and mistakes in professions – such as in nuclear power plants and surgery – are primarily caused by a sleep-deprived workforce.
