The original price is 53 and 33 cents

We can solve this by using an equation as shown if "x" equals the original sales price...

x -
(1/4)x = 40

Basically, its 100% of x being lowered to 75% of it's original price (25% discount so 1/4th being taken away from it), which should be 40$

(3/4)x = 40

(40)(4/3)

x = 160/3 or x ≈ 53.33
