By definition two numbers are opposite if their distance to 0 is the same.

distance to 0 for 1/2 = 1/2 - 0 = 1/2

distance to 0 for -1/2 = 0 - (-1/2) = 1/2

Another way to verify it , is that the sum of the 2 values should be 0. in our case,
