Step-by-step explanation:
Cellular respiration involves the breakdown of food compounds to yield energy in the form of ATP and other by-products such as water and carbon dioxide.
Cellular respiration may be classified into aerobic respiration or anaerobic respiration.
Aerobic respiration occurs in the presence of oxygen-generating more energy in the form of ATP while anaerobic respiration occurs in the absence of oxygen to generate less amount of energy in the form of ATP.
During anaerobic respiration, a six-carbon sugar such as glucose is broken down into two three-carbon pyruvic acid molecules and yields 2 molecules of ATP.
However, aerobic respiration which occurs in three phases (glycolysis, Kreb's cycle and electron transport chain) one glucose molecule is broken down to yield more than 32 molecules of ATP.
