If y=4 the 8x-2(4)=48 2•4 is 8 so 8x-8=48. Since it’s subtracting 8 you do the opposite of subtraction which is addition. When you do 8+8 they cancel each other out and when you do 48+8 you get 56. 8x=56 so we do the opposite of multiplication which is division. Instead of doing 8 times x you do 8x/8 (8x divided by 8) to get x by itself. Now we divide 8 on the other side so 56/8 (56 divided by 8) is 7. Therefore x=7. To check it, we do 8•7- 2•4 and see if it equals 48. 8 times 7 is 56 and 2 times for is 8, 56-8 is 48.
