What was the problem with America passing the Espionage and Sedition Acts during the war?

These acts severely restricted the right to free speech. IF you were to write or by any other mean criticize or expose the government and the officials working in it you could face severe punishment in the forms of big fines or even imprisonment. Many reporters got arrested because of this. This allowed the government to control individuals and what they talk about.
