Chocolate was enjoyed in Mesoamerica for many centuries. The Olmecs, the Mayans and the Aztecs all enjoyed cocoa beans. However, chocolate was often consumed as a drink, and it was usually spicy.

Chocolate travelled to Europe after the conquest of the Aztecs, and it became very popular among the European high classes. One reason was the fact that Cortez brought cacao seeds to the Spanish court. Another reason for its popularity was that chocolate began to be consumed as a sweet, not a spiciy drink.
