During the Middle Ages, Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV challenged the Church by declaring himself powerful enough to appoint Church officials. The conflict between the religious and political matters on holding the leadership in Europe das been an old one. Henry IV behaviour towards the Church and refuse to follow orders angered Pope George VII who excommunicated Henry IV from the Roman Catholic Church. The conflict resolved by Henry IV begging for forgiveness from Pope George VII.
