Scientific discoveries were from explorers wanting mroe accurate maps, faster ships, better tools for navigation, and more accurate timepieces, etc. These discoveries helped fuel the development of the Scientific Revolution. The Scientific Revolution and the Age of Exploration

Governments begin to offer awards to anyone who could invent a device for measuring longitude properly to help ships sail more efficiently, and thus build one's government more power.
