Answer: virulent = extremely harmful

Virulent is an adjective which conveys the intensity of the illness and how much harm it has caused among the settlers. It doesn’t mean it was completely unexpected, long lasting or locally widespread. Virulent only indicates how bad it was. It could have been something expected or short or not widespread.
