It was a document that authorized the president to grant unsettled lands west of the Mississippi in exchange for Indian lands within existing state borders. A few tribes went peacefully, but many resisted the relocation policy. It was called for moving Native American tribes living east of the Mississippi River to lands west of the river.

The law authorized the president to negotiate with southern Native American tribes for their removal to federal territory west of the Mississippi River in exchange for white settlement of their ancestral lands.

It lead to most full blooded Native Americans living almost exclusively on reserves.
