In Village Life in America and A Confederate Girl's Diary, both young ladies are experiencing a period of war. They both have times where they are apprehensive, and they both need the war to finish as quickly as time permits.

There are a couple of differences with the two journals as well. The greatest distinction is that Richards is on the association's side while Dawson is on the Confederates side. Dawson was devasted at the loss of her side but Richards was triumphant at the success of her side.
