In this writing she is strong and powerful standing up to all those who opposed the civil rights movement. But in her responses in her interview form Paris Review she saw herself as a girl among giants and had a lot of self-doubt. She called her poems “silly verses,” cringed when people called her a “humorist,” and considered her work a failure because she wanted to be known for her satire.
