In 1688, Protestant Whigs in England led a bloodless coup which forced King James II into exile and elevated his daughter, Mary, and her husband, William of Orange, to the monarchy. English colonists in North America eagerly followed these events.

Part 2: The Great Awakening affected the colonies by changing many people's attitudes towards religion. Before this revival, religious piety and fervor had been waning in the colonies. The Great Awakening is credited with helping to pave the way for the American Revolution.
