Extratropical cyclones are also called medium latitude cyclones. They receive this name because they are located in the middle latitudes of the Earth, between 30º and 60º from the equator line. They are associated with a low pressure system that takes place between the tropics and the poles, and depend on the temperature contrast between masses of cold and warm air. They are very common phenomena that generally produce cloudiness and sudden temperature changes.
