x ----> number of hockey players at the start

y ----> other skaters

we know that


(x)/(y)=(2)/(5)


x=(2)/(5)y -----> equation A


x+18=y ----> equation B

substitute equation A in equation B and solve for y


(2)/(5)y+18=y


y-(2)/(5)y=18


(3)/(5)y=18


y=18(5)/3=30

Find the value of x


x=(2)/(5)(30)=12

therefore

The number of hockey players and the other skaters now is equal to

x+y+18=12+30+18=60
