A phone line runs east along a field of 1.4 miles and then north along the edge of the same field for 2.5 miles. If the phone line cost 3500 per mile to install, how much could have been saved if the phone line had been installed diagonally across the field?

Answer:3621.41

Explanation:

Given

Phone line runs along east for 1.4 miles

then 2.5 miles along north

It costs 3500 currency per mile

Total distance=1.4+2.5=3.9

Cost=3.9* 3500=13,650

For diagonal running

Length=√(1.4^2+2.5^2)=2.865

Cost=2.865* 3500=10,028.58

Thus currency saved =13,650-10,028.58=3621.41
