The French had a greater interest in trade with the Native Americans and insular agriculture/settlement than conquering pre-existing populations. Unlike the English and Spanish, the French and Dutch traveled to North America searching for trade connections and access to resources, mostly avoiding conflict with the Indigenous Canadians if possible.
