A drama club has 45 members and adds 5 new members each month. A photography club has 42 members and adds 6 new members each month. Set up and solve an equation to determine the number of months, m, it will take before both clubs have the same number of members.

Let's call m the number of months.

The drama club adds 5 new members every month. This means that after m months the number of people that will have added is: 5m

If you initially have 45 members then the number of members n will be:


n = 45 + 5m

The photography club adds 6 new members every month. This means that after m months the number of people that will have added is: 6m

If you initially have 42 members then the number of members n will be:


n = 42 + 6m.

To know in which month both clubs will have the same number of members we equate the equations and solve for m.


42 + 6m = 45 + 5m


6m-5m = 45-42


m = 3

In the third month both clubs will have the same number of members:
n = 60
