Answer: Decreased amounts of GABA and Glutamate are both considered to be contributing factors in cognitive impairments of people suffering from schizophrenia. There are numerous studies that show normal brain function can occur with a GABA and Glutamate balance. Patients are given atypical antipsychotics to help with the cognitive impairments.
