Answer:

−3

Explanation:

7[-4] + {5}^(2) = -28 + 25 = -3

According to the Order of Operations [GEMS\BOMDAS\PEMDAS etc.], in this case, evaluate the exponent BEFORE doing anything else to avoid confusion. Then, you take care of your multiplication.

To solve this you must replace x with -4 and y with 5 in the equation 7x + y² like so:

7 × (-4) + 5²

To solve this use PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponent, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction)

REMEMBER: IF NOT APPLICABLE TO THE EQUATION YOU MAY SKIP THAT STEP IN PEMDAS .

Exponent...

7 × (-4) +

5² = 5 × 5 = 25

7 × (-4) + 25

Multiplication...

7 × (-4) + 25

7 × (-4) = -28

-28 + 25

Addition...

When adding a positive number with a negative number you will act as if you are subtracting the two numbers, then take the sign of the largest number (disregarding the signs). In this case the largest number is 28 and its sign is negative. Your answer will have a negative sign.

-28 + 25 = -3

-3

Hope this helped!
