Late 1800s were the period of tense relations between two countries, mostly provoked by many immigration acts introduced in the United States. It was followed even by the mass riots in the United States which led to death of many Chinese immigrants. It was one of the most tense period of the diplomatic relations between two countries.

Although in the second half of 19th Century two countries started developing diplomatic relations, it all started changing in 1875, when certain restriction were placed on the Chinese immigrants. This was followed by Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 which forbade Chinese immigration in the United States for ten years. This and similar acts led to riots against Chinese immigrants across the country.
