Explanation:

y = ax^2 - 4x + 3

Convert to vertex form:-

= a(x^2 - 4/a) + 3

= a [ (x - 2/a)^2 - 4/a^2 ] + 3

From this we see that the line of symmetry is y = 2/a so

2/a = -2

-2a = 2

a = -1.
