A vender sold a combined total of 104 sodas and hot dogs. The number of sodas sold was 42 more than the number of hot dogs sold. Find the number of sodas sold and the number of hot dogs sold.

73 sodas and 31 hot dogs

Explanation:

A vender sold a combined total of 104 sodas and hot dogs

The number of sodas sold was 42 more than the number of hot dogs sold.

Let the number of hot dogs sold be x,

The number of sodas sold will be x + 42

So, x + (x + 42) = 104

2x = 104 - 42

2x = 62

x =
(62)/(2) = 31

Therefore there were 31 hot dogs sold and; 104 - 31 = 73 sodas sold

Let hot dogs be x, soda is x+42
then, x+(x+42)=104
x=31, number of hot dogs sold=31, number of soda sold=73
