He established a strong centralized state under firm control by limiting the power of democracy and freedoms in Mexico. The revolution in 1910 started when he didn't acknowledge Francisco I. Madero's winning the election and had him arrested and later Madero supporter protested, called for revolution, and in 1911 it drove Diaz to surrender and flee into exile.
