Why was France's acquisition of Louisiana a problem for the United States?

Answer: Thomas Jefferson did not intend to buy all of the lands in the Louisiana Purchase. He only wanted the port of New Orleans to help conduct trade. Napolean ended up giving Jefferson all the land.
