The vertex is the the point on the graph where the graph does a "u-turn".

this point can either represent the maximum value or the minimum value depending on which way the graph is facing.

In this case, the graph looks like an "n" (as opposed to a "u").

We can clearly see that the point where the graph makes a U-turn is (1, 2)

we can also see that no part of the graph extends above this point, hence this point represents the maximum value which y could possibly be.

Hence (1,2) is maximum
