The tensions of the Civil War formed over the role of federal government vs. states rights, primarily in the context of slavery. While the federal government in the North wanted to abolish slavery, Southern states financially depended on the free labour of slaves and fought against the federal intervention. When the South attempted succession from the union, the North declared war, thus beginning the Civil War.
