What was the idea behind the black codes that limited civil rights in the south

It was a form of suppression against African Americans to limit their rights and abilities to become recognized as people in the eyes of the law. Black codes essentially limited their freedom to ensure that black’s availability as a cheap labor force (after abolishment after civil war) would continue.
