Carbon is taken from the atmosphere, as carbon dioxide, by plants through photosynthesis and incorporated into the biosphere as carbohydrates. Carbon dioxide from the atmosphere also gets dissolved in the water of the hydrosphere and utilized by photoautotrophs. This carbon held up in biosphere can be released by the atmosphere through processes such as combustion and decomposition.
