(b)/(2a)

y = - x² - 6x + 15 ← is in standard form

with a = - 1, b = - 6, thus

(-6)/(-2) = - 3

Substitute x = - 3 into the function for corresponding value of y

y = - (- 3)² - 6(- 3) + 15 = - 9 + 18 + 15 = 24

vertex = (- 3, 24)
