The process of subduction occurs when two or more tectonic plates move toward one another, thus they collide, or rather form a convergent plate boundary. When the case is that there is an oceanic and continental tectonic plates that collide, then we have the formation of a subduction zone. In the subduction zone, we have a process in which the oceanic tectonic plate is moving below the continental tectonic plate, and as it does, it gradually moves down toward the mantle. Once the oceanic crust comes in contact with the mantle, it starts to melt because of the high temperature, thus it is getting recycled. On this kind of place, the volcanic activity and the earthquakes are common things that happen pretty much every day.
